EFL curriculum is learner centered because its instruction focuses on the learner and the learning process. Students become part of the learning process in which the teacher establish learning goals, developing and choosing learning strategies and each student evaluate his/her own progress. It is the kind of instruction that helps students to gain confidence in their ability to learn and use of the target language.
ROLE OF THE TEACHER
In a learner centered instruction teacher´s role is like a facilitator who provides and models tools and activities in which students interact with the instructor and one another.
FOUR PRINCIPLES OF LEARNER CENTERED INSTRUCTION
1.- Focus on Students weaknesses and strengths: The teacher identifies students´ weaknesses and strengths in the learning process.
2.- Training: Students master their abilities and skills so they can use them in real life.
3.- Learning at anytime: Students are well prepared to face any challenge in and outside the classroom everyday.
4.- Teacher ´s decisions: Decisions that the teacher takes are crucial for their students learning process and success.
One possible way to involve students is to present them with problems that resemble real life.
Another possible way is to have questions that pique students' curiosity and motivates them to think.
LEARNER CENTERED INSTRUCTION PROS
Students actively participate in all aspects of their learning process.
Every part of their environment should help students learn. Examples include: posters, pictures, toys, name tags on classroom's objects, etc.
